Empowering Women in Construction: A Spotlight on Brittany O’Connor

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we look to recognize the invaluable contributions of women like Brittany O’Connor, who are breaking barriers and making waves in traditionally male-dominated industries. Brittany O’Connor, a budding welding Tacker at EXCEL Fabrication, offers us a glimpse into her journey and the significance of her role in the construction sector.
Discovering Her Future
Last year, an EXCEL Recruiter met Brittany’s husband and, through conversation, discovered that his wife was interested in becoming a welder. EXCEL eagerly sponsored Brittany through the ABC program. As the only female in her graduating class, Brittany shares that her biggest challenge may have been the level of perfectionism she poses on herself to deliver a quality result. “I wanted my work to be perfect,” she shares. “I think the difference between men and women is that we want things to be perfect.” She also believes that her steady hands benefit her greatly.
Following Her Great Grandfather’s Legacy
Brittany is inspired by her Great-Grandfather, Gerald Palmer, whose legacy as a welder for over forty years with ExxonMobil and a local railroad company. She recalls running to her great-grandfather as a child, asking what he did that day at work. As a young child, she didn’t fully understand what he did, but she knew she wanted to be just like him.
Looking Forward
Brittany’s journey to fabrication showcases the impact of perseverance, patience, and tenacity. She is a trailblazer, inspiring more women to grow in the construction field. Moving forward, Brittany is excited to master other welding techniques, such as MIG, TIG, and flare, which will be learned on the job at EXCEL Fabrication.
